Shield - Carried, not to ward off spears and arrows, the shield provided spiritual protection. On the cover were painted birds, animals and symbols which protected the warrior. A shield adorned with eagle feathers was believed to give its owner the swiftness and courage of the bird.

Housing Sioux lived in teepees because they followed the buffalo and they needed to pack up and move quickly. An entire teepee village could be set up or taken down in an hour! A teepee has tall wooden poles and is covered with tough buffalo hides.phouse.gif Sioux_tipi.gif

Travois: A travois was used to move goods, such as a teepee. The travois was built of buffalo skin spread over two long poles and pulled by horses. Before horses were introduced to the Sioux, they used dogs to make the travois.

Legends

Dream catchers
Dream catchers were made of of twigs, sinew, and feathers that was woven by the grandfathers and grandmothers for newborn children and hung above the cradleboard to give the infants peaceful, beautiful dreams. The night air is filled with dreams. Good dreams are clear and know the way to the dreamer, descending through the feathers. The slightest movement of the feathers indicated the passage of yet another beautiful dream. Bad dreams, however, are confused and confusing. They cannot find their way through the web and are trapped there until the sun rises and evaporates them like the morning dew.
